Chapter Sixteen

Lace looks amazing. Well, as amazing as a strip club can look. The lads and girls did a great job with the painting. It’s still mostly black, but the contrasting colours and soft furnishings, including some kind of fake wall drapes, Beth chose makes it seem sleek, classy, and a fuck of a lot less dingy. This is having a positive effect on admission. We’ve only been open for over an hour and the main floor is already crammed full of patrons. Clearly, whatever marketing stuff Beth has been doing behind the scenes is working when it comes to getting people through the door.

I stand at the end of the bar, watching the room. Cherry is currently on stage while Lexie and Paige work the floor. Donna is behind the bar with Roo, who seems to be picking things up fast. I have another dancer starting next week and one the week after. That should give us enough numbers to keep things going for now, but realistically, I need another two members of staff. That’s not likely to happen though, since we barely got any CV’s through the first time we advertised for staff. Dickson really left this place in the toilet.

My phone vibrates in my pocket, and I fish it out, glancing at the screen. It’s a message from Piper. It’s a nonsense message about her day, meaningless ramblings, but I don’t care. I love that my sister is texting me at all. I fire back a reply and notice another message waiting for me from Dean.

This does not make me smile as much.

He’s been pushing me to find out more about the brothers, to find out who the hell sold us out that day, to unravel that week, in fact. I’m reluctant to go there because once I start digging around, I have no control over what dirt comes up. And I really loathe rooting around in my brothers’ personal lives. It’s easy enough to do, don’t get me wrong. All you need is a name, an address, some other personal details, and from there it’s simple. We all have an electronic footprint. Every time you use a service, you leave your details, you leave information behind. I can get into that, I can stitch it all together to create a picture. If you’ve had an email account, a bank account, if you’ve ever voted, if you’ve been to school, if you’ve had a doctor, dentist, if you’ve had a job, if you haven’t had a job and been on welfare… there are a million different ways electronically your information is collected and stored. This is done every minute of every day.

I can get into those files, into that data, and from there, I can get into your whole life.

If you’re doing something you shouldn’t be, there will be an electronic trail. There’s always a trail.

The same here. If someone helped Wilson, there will be evidence. Phone calls. Money may have exchanged hands. Something will have taken place.
